World Cup Semi-Finals Preview: France v Morocco

December 14, 2022

The second World Cup semi-finals kicks off on Wednesday evening (11pm), as Argentina and Croatia meet at the Al Bayt Stadium. Is it Mbappe’s time to shine or can this incredible Moroccan journey continue?

France v England

Morocco v Spain

France remain on course for back-to-back titles to become the first nation to successfully defend the World Cup since Brazil in 1962. They weren’t at their best in the 2-1 QF victory over England and were thankful to Harry Kane for channelling his inner Johnny Wilkinson as he ballooned his penalty kick high into the stands. He had the chance to equalise with the English in the ascendancy in the second half of that game, and it could have been so much different had he converted. Oliver Giroud scored the winner against England, and while no one can argue that Kylian Mbappe is undoubtedly the star performer in this French side, it is Giroud who they rely on to score the most important goals. France will start as strong favourites to progress, but they would be foolish to take anything for granted against their giant-killing opposition.

Many African sides have been tipped throughout the years to make their presence felt on the world stage, only to come up woefully short. It has shocked everyone, but themselves, that this Morocco team have become the first African nation to progress to a World Cup semi-final and to look like potential winners. This has all the makings of a classic encounter, as both sides have exciting attacking players in their lineups. Morocco will be happy to concede possession but counterattack at pace, with players like Hakim Ziyech & Sofiene Boufal posing a considerable threat with their speed and skill. There is a genuine togetherness with this team and a connection with their passionate supporters that has been evident during their celebrations. It points to a serious challenge for current holders France to overcome. They should be good enough to do that; however, only will just about prevail.

Prediction
France 2-1 Morocco
