Trocaire Lent Campaign For UAE Teachers

February 13, 2023

Trocaire has announced a special edition Lent campaign for 2023, specifically designed to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by Irish teachers working in the UAE. The plight of these teachers has often been overlooked, with many people only seeing the high salaries and luxurious lifestyles they lead in the Middle East. However, the reality is far from what it seems.

Aine Ni Painindabollix, the head of the Irish Teachers’ Association in Dubai, welcomed the news, saying, “For anyone living in the UAE, you have no doubt heard teachers talk about and seen on Instagram how difficult it is here. But it’s fantastic that this is finally being picked up internationally.” She goes on to explain that the high salaries, city breaks, skiing trips, and overseas holidays put a lot of pressure on teachers, leading many of them to struggle with managing their finances. “An average teacher will have two short city breaks at midterms, skiing at Christmas followed by a few weeks in Ireland, then Thailand at Easter, before finally heading off travelling for the Summer.”

The pressure faced by teachers in the UAE is not just a result of these holidays, however, as they also have to worry about double brunching and pool parties every weekend. Aine was also quick to remind people of teachers’ struggles in managing their finances, “Sure, if we were any good at that, we would have done business.”

Eamon Prenderville, known as Dubai’s most ignorant man, will represent the Trocaire campaign. Aine says, “I can’t think of a better representative for the campaign than Eamo.” This decision has raised some eyebrows, as Eamon is known for his controversial views and lack of sensitivity towards certain social issues. However, Aine is confident that he will be able to bring attention to the struggles faced by Irish teachers in the UAE.

It is yet to be determined how the funds raised from the limited edition Trocaire box will be spent, but leading suggestions include a free day in Zero Gravity. Whatever the funds are used for, the main goal is to raise awareness about the challenges faced by Irish teachers in the UAE and to help support them in any way possible.
